HOW TO CRITIQUE A WORK OF ART….   IN FOUR EASY STEPS!!!!

 

Complete the 4 steps of critique with a photograph of your choice. It can be any photo found online or one you have taken. Start by opening blank google doc and typing your name at the top. Then place the photograph you are critiquing underneath. Then type your answers to all 4 steps below the photo. Share with morrism@hcusd2.org when complete

 

STEP 1: Description

“What do I see?

    List all of the things you see in the photograph

    Give only facts. List at least 10 things 


 

STEP 2: Analyze 

“How is the work organized?”

    Pay attention to the Elements and Principles of Design and look to see 

    how the artist uses them.  List 2 different ways the artist used the elements and principles. Be sure to use complete sentences and accurately describe where each is used within the photograph

Texture                      Repetition

proportion                Contrast


 

STEP 3: Interpretation

 “What is happening?”

 “What is the artist trying to say?”

Explain or tell the meaning of the work.  Use your intelligence, experience, imagination, and courage.  Your interpretation can express your feelings, negative or positive, but you must be able to support these conclusions. There is no right or wrong as long as you can support it with facts from the photograph

 Write at least 5 complete sentences. 


 

STEP 4: Judgment 

“What do you think of this piece of art?”

Judge whether the work succeeds or fails.  To make a good judgment you need to be honest with yourself by knowing why you feel the way you do.  This step is purely opinion, there is no right or wrong answer, You can love or hate the photo, but be sure to back up your opinion with facts from the previous steps. Write at least 5 complete sentences.
